History

For the cause of the Maginot line we should go back to 1870. In this year the Prussian (Germany) attacked France and after a war of a year they won and France lost Lorraine and the Alsace. Between  1880 and 1914 France constructed forts around the villages of Paris, Verdun, Toul, Epinal, Belfort and Lyon. The forts where build from stone and were modernised with turrets and concrete. The forts where designed by General Séré de Rivières.

In 1914 Germany attacked France again. After a 4 year war in trenches France won the war and got Lorraine and the Alsace back. The forts around Verdun would play an important roll. As France had back Lorraine and the Alsace this new part was not defended

As from 1925 a studied was done how to defend the new border. In 1929 the plan was made to build fortifications along side the border with Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Switzerland and Italia. The law for the construction was made by minister  of war Andre Maginot and accepted in the parliament in 1930. The construction could start
