Hackenberg
This is the largest fort of the Maginot line. It has 17 blocks, 2 entrances and more than 10 kilometres of underground gallery of which 3.5 with railway track. In total the fort is situated on a terrain of 160 hectares. Underground is the barracks for 1200 men, a power plant for 4 engines with 380 Hp and an ammunition warehouse. The armament was 9 guns 75 mm, 5 heavy mortars 135 mm, 4 mortars81 mm and several infantry weapons. The fort could fire 4 tonnes of ammunition per minute. | |||||

Before the war the fort is visited by. George VI and the sultan of Morocco.
During the war the fort supported the nearby fort of Michelsberg located south
of Hackenberg. When the Germans abandoned the fort they blew up the ammunition
warehouse damaging an armoured door

Nowadays the fort is open for public. During the visit you see the barracks, ammunition warehouse, power plant and block 9 with a retractable turret for two 135 mm mortars
