AFTER THE WAR After Germany had surrendered the French army inspected the forts for damage. Some forts were seriously damaged as the Germans had blown up galleries and took out engines and metal for their own industry. Most of the forts were repaired or soled to private persons who took out all the metal. The repaired forts were used again as a defence during the cold war or could be used as underground storage or hospital. After 1975 most of the forts were closed and abandoned by the French army. Since 1980 some forts are open for public: La Ferté, Fermont, lmmerhof, abri Zeiterholz, Hackenberg, Bambesch, Rohrbach, Simserhof, Four á Chaux, Schoenenbourg, Esch (casemate), Marckolsheim (casemate 35/3). A few forts are still used by the army as radar post of atomic shelter. More and more people are getting interested in the Maginot line and more forts are open now for public | ||
